Recycled Content Surfaces
There are many governmental, institutional and societal incentives today for architects, commercial and residential building contractors,
and consumers alike, to consider the environmental aspects of their projects. Consequently, the popularity of recycled surfacing products
has been steadily increasing for the last several years.
This has challenged many surfacing manufacturers to develop and produce recycled
content products which stand up to the quality and performance of their traditional products. At the same time, architects, contractors
or owners have been challenged with the assessment of the comparative benefits of one manufacturer’s product versus another.
Fortunately,
international and national certification programs have evolved to guide manufacturers in product development and to give consumers
standards for measuring the environmental benefits of the particular product(s) chosen for their project. These include: Scientific
Certification Systems (SCS) Recycled Content Certification, The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building
Rating System and National Green Building Certification.
